I've heard from a couple people who saw sneak previews of the first 45-ish min of the movie (it was unfinished obviously) that its really kinda' sad in that heartwarming kinda' way at the begining.
This is potentially one of the best Pixar movies in a while.

I wasn't mixing them up; Disney "promoted" the movie to a feature film. Whatever, I think you might be right anyway.

Disney and Pixar are two vastly separate entities, don't confuse them.
Toy Story 2 was initially being made by a secondary production team at Pixar - the first project not supervised by Lasseter. He was on vacation.
Yes, Disney did want it to be released in theaters, but Pixar knew the film had huge problems. Pixar had to bring Lasseter back in 9 months before the release and he threw the vast majority of it out and started over.
