Of the 858 Europeans killed, 540 were from the English and British contingent, including the 1st Battalion's commanding officer. 471 Africans also died fighting with them. The 24th performed with distinction. Soldiers fought till their ammunition had been expended, some killed trying to escape like Lt Melville who tried saving the Queen's Colours. Later this flag would be recovered from the Tugela River where he fell. Around 60 men were thought to have made their escape from the battle.
