Yes, but in keeping with the group's Irish pride, St. Patrick is credited for driving the snakes out of Ireland. There were probably never snakes in Ireland because of the cold climate, but it's likely an allegory to the demise of the paganism. The Aztecs used snakes liberally in their world view and when the Spanish arrived in the New World, they burned almost everything that depicted the snake as anything other than evil.
