Rachmaninov was of course the brilliant virtuoso we all know, but as a genious composer he has as well his place in the standard classical repertoire. Here we hear him play the adagio sostenuto from his second piano concerto. This unique recording with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra directed by Leopold Stokowski was made for RCA in 1929.

6:09 is so pretty. I almost regret having ever heard this movement. It gives such structure and articulation to the emotion of sadness and loss that it's hard to resist feeling it. Italians beautify vulgarity; leave it to the Russians to beautify intense sadness.

Sergei Rachmaninov,King of the blues. If you get my drift. This particular piece presses all the right buttons.Magnificent.I have requested this as my funeral music,to see me out,as it were.

This is in my favourites, and I just clicked on it again. It had me in tears by 01:13, and I wasn't sad before. How can it do that to me? It's sublime.

That's what I was thinking. Normally, people lose all remaining manners when they comment Youtube videos. At least respect for music can refrain us from doing that here. :)

I imagine the Orthodox Church or orthodox chorals with begining,or the peasants looking at the step,in a dark, cold, and cloudy morning. This is the best performnce ever of this movement.
