San Francisco Giants vs. Pirates at Candlestick Park

Candlestick Park wasn't such a bad place to see a baseball game - during the day that is. The winds didn't tend to kick up until late in the afternoon, so before that happened you could watch the Giants under a warm sunny sky, take off your shirt and have a cold beer. This video was made on August 23, 1992. The Giants were going nowhere that year in the National League West, but we all worried that they were going to Tampa Bay at the end of the year. It looked like the end of the line for the San Francisco Giants, so I wanted to get in at least one more game before they deserted the City by the Bay. They played the excellent Pittsburgh Pirates that day, who were on their way to a National League Eastern Division title. The star of that team was Barry Bonds. Although the Pirates were a better team, Giant pitcher Bud Black pitched a terrific game, and with help from relief pitcher Rod Beck got the win in a 5-2 game. As it turned out, the Giants didn't go to Tampa Bay after all. Ironically, it was the owner of the much-hated Los Angeles Dodgers who prevented that from happening. He helped block the sale of the team, leading to new buyers emerging who were committed to keeping the Giants in San Francisco. The following season, the Giants had Barry Bonds and the team had its best year ever in San Francisco, finishing with 103 victories. Incredibly, it wasn't enough to make the playoffs! The Atlanta Braves won 104 games to edge out the Giants. There was no wild-card in baseball then, so the Giants went home a very frustrated team. The Giants played their last game in Candlestick Park in 1999 before moving to their beautiful new park, currently called AT&T Park. Candlestick Park is still there (called Monster Park now) and is the home of the San Francisco 49er football team.

Damn, I miss candlestick! It was nice and simple, like ryan9942 said, where you go to just watch the game and not do some other gimmicky yuppie shit. If you can't handle the Candlestick wind, you're probably from LA. AT&T is beautiful, but half the fans are people who moved here from other parts of the country and got their tickets through their white-collar jobs and really don't care. Die yuppie scum!!!

Whatever and your probably one of those fans that just goes to games for the ballpark, you go to watch a game, not to tour a ballpark. The Candlestick fans were way more into it and were much smarter than the Giants fans now, like how A's fans are, it's all corporate season tix holders at AT&T so which means a lot of the fans go to Giants games just because they got free tixs from their work. By the way about the Vet, Veteran Stadium Eagles and Phillies fans were HORRIBLE! (talk about assholes)

felt more authentic? been to both and enjoyed each but wtf are you talking about? there were complaints about candlestick for years and they definitely got it right with pac bell (or ATT&T)...to be honest Oakland coliseum is nothing special...reminds me of the vet in philly which was the worst of all...ur letting sentimental memories get in the way or ur judgment

Don't tell me, let me guess. You're white, you have a dog, you use your cell phone every waking minute, you like double latte with soy milk at Starbucks, and say "it's like, you know" a lot.

Kind of, I remember how passionate both sides were at SF/LA games in the mid/late 90s, I was too young to remember games from the early 90s (being that I was born only 6 months before the '89 quake.

Candlestick felt more authentic, like how the Oakland Coliseum is, thats how I like to watch a ballgame is in a crappy stadium and thats how all ballparks should be because people care too much about the stadium, I hate fans who just go for the ballpark but I like how AT&T is a great ballpark and I love how there's bars and restaurants by the ballpark to tailgate at before the game unlike at Candlestick.

So you remember how hostile Giants fans were then?, Dodger games were always hella rowdy, a lot more back then then they are now.
